Hill Start Assist

Hill Start Assist (HSA) is available for the first time on the LEAF®.

HSA has been added to the VDC system of SV and SL models. HSA replaces the auto release function of the electric parking brake for starting on an incline. HSA keeps the vehicle from rolling downhill when the driver is trying to accelerate from a stop.

The Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system automatically engages HSA when the following conditions are met:

The HSA function maintains brake fluid pressure so the vehicle does not move backwards even if the brake pedal is released so the driver has a few seconds to depress the accelerator pedal to start the vehicle while it is stopped on an uphill slope. When starting from a stop on a steep hill this function operates when the vehicle is on an uphill slope of 10% or more and the selector level is in a position other than P (Park) or N (Neutral). HSA is only for the start aid. It maintains brake pressure for approximately two seconds after the brake pedal is released, and then releases the pressure gradually. If the vehicle can start by the accelerator operation, the brake is released automatically and a smooth start can be performed.

Fail Safe

When a malfunction occurs in the HSA function, the control is suspended for the following functions: VDC, TCS, HSA, EBD, and AUC. The vehicle status becomes the same as models without VDC, TCS, and HSA functions. However, ABS and EBD functions operate normally.
