The Front and Rear Sonar system informs the driver with a visual and audible alert of:

• Front obstacles when the shift lever is in the D (DRIVE) position

• Both front and rear obstacles when the shift lever is in the R (REVERSE) position

System operation parameters:

• Active at speeds below 6 mph (10 km/h)

• Inactive at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h)

Combination meter operation:

• The combination meter receives the detection distance signal via CAN communication from the sonar control unit.

• The combination meter operates the sonar display in the vehicle information display.

• The combination meter changes the color and blinking cycle of display according to the detection distance.

• The vehicle information display SETTINGS in the combination meter can be used for adjusting the Parking Aids. The sonar system detection range settings can be set to Near, Mid, and Far.

First Stage:

When the object is detected by a corner sensor, the indicator displays green and blinks, and the tone sounds intermittently. The intermittent tone will stop in 3 seconds if the obstacle is detected by only one corner sensor and the distance does not change.

Second Stage:

When the vehicle moves closer to the object, the indicator turns yellow and the rate of blinking and tone sound increases.

Third Stage:

When the vehicle is very close to the object, the indicator stops blinking and turns red, and the tone sounds continuously.

Note: The Sonar Buzzer function is integrated into the AV control unit.

Sonar Control Unit

The sonar control unit is installed in the lower dash. The front and rear sonar sensors transmit a sensor signal to the sonar control unit when detecting an obstacle. The sonar control unit converts the signal into a detection distance signal and transmits it to the AV control unit via CAN communication.

Sonar System Diagnostics

The sonar control unit is capable of self-diagnosis. It can detect a sensor malfunction or sensor harness open circuits. CONSULT-III plus can be used to view self-diagnostic results of the sensor signals.

Obstacle Detection Distance

The front and rear sonar systems chime if an object is detected. The chime varies based on the distance.

The sonar control unit changes the output of the sonar display and warning buzzers in three stages according to the sensitivity level set for the obstacle detection distance from the corner sensors.
