Programming Procedure for Blank ECMs

Replacement Engine Control Modules can now come as blank ECMs meaning they're shipped without software. The new blank ECMs will be applicable to vehicles (starting with the new 2013 Versa Sedan). When a replacement or "blank" Engine Control Module (ECM) is being installed for any reason, it will need to be "programmed" with software (not just reprogrammed).

Although the procedure for "programming" is similar to the procedure for reprogramming a replacement ECM or an existing ECM, you'll need to refer to NTB12-091 to learn the complete step-by-step Blank ECM Replacement Procedure.

Important Note

If the vehicle's current ECM part number (P/N) can be accessed with CONSULT-III plus, then its inter nal P/N and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) can be saved. If C-III plus cannot access the ECM part number from the current ECM, then you'll need to obtain the P/N by entering the VIN into the Electronic Parts Catalog. After you do this, you'll also need to register the VIN manually in C-III plus, to begin programming.
