The engine's internal friction has been reduced with the use of hydrogen-free Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating on top of the valve lifters, which creates about half the friction of previous coatings.

Each spring springs utilize a new beehive shape featuring a smaller diameter coil at the top of the spring. Since the top coil of the spring is smaller, the reduced inertial weight helps provide better stress distribution. This variable frequency spring technology also helps improve valve train efficiency since the valves can perform at a higher RPM over traditional springs.

The 2013 Sentra S trim level comes standard with a 6-Speed Manual Transmission designed for smooth shifting. On all other trim levels, the new generation RE0F11A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT®) is standard.

The RE0F11A is a new iteration of the Xtronic CVT which incorporates many technologies to help improve fuel efficiency. This CVT is more compact than previous designs and has an ultra-flat torque converter, flexible lock-up damper, more efficient oil pump, smaller pulleys that are approximately 13% lighter, and an auxiliary gearbox using planetary gearing. Comprising the auxiliary gearbox is a multi-disc clutch and multi-disc brake. This mechanism performs shifting (1st, 2nd and reverse gears) with oil pressure from the control valve. This sub-planetary gear mechanism is used to switch from low to high ranges, allowing the CVT to achieve a wide ratio span of 7.3:1 total transmission gearing. The smaller pulleys are able to reach higher transmission ratio coverage. This helps provide for better responsiveness at startups and low speeds, and also helps lower engine rpm at high speeds for good fuel efficiency. The Sentra's CVT was designed with modified components that help to reduce friction. The new RE0F11A Xtronic CVT requires Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3.

Steering

The Sentra's new Electronic Power Steering system helps reduce the effort it takes to drive at low speeds which makes it much easier to park. In addition to easier parking, the system also helps control the effort required to steer while driving on the highway at higher speeds.

Sentra_Steering_Chart.jpg

The EPS control unit performs an arithmetical operation based on input, such as steering wheel turning force (sensor signal) from the torque sensor and vehicle speed signal. It then generates an optimum assist torque signal that is sent to the EPS motor according to the driving condition.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

This system monitors tire pressure in real time to let a customer know when a tire's pressure decreases 25% below the recommended pressure. When this occurs the TPMS Warning Light will illuminate.

The CHECK TIRE PRESSURE warning message is displayed in the odometer when the low tire pressure warning light is illuminated and low tire pressure is detected. The CHECK TIRE PRESSURE warning message turns off when the low tire pressure warning light turns off.

TPMS System Description

When the vehicle has reached a speed of 16 MPH (25 km/h) or greater, the BCM receives a signal transmitted from the tire pressure sensors/transmitters installed in each wheel. The BCM reads the air pressure signals received by the remote keyless entry receiver. In addition, the BCM also uses the outside key antennas (driver side, passenger side and rear bumper) to identify the location of the transmitters (if equipped with individual tire pressure display). If the BCM detects low inflation pressure or a system malfunction, it sends a signal to the combination meter via CAN communication to illuminate the low tire pressure warning lamp. In addition, a warning message will be displayed in the vehicle information display.

Sentra_Page_7.jpg

Easy Fill Tire Alert Function

The new Sentra utilizes a Tire Pressure Monitoring System that can be equipped with an optional Easy Fill Tire Alert. If equipped with Easy Fill Tire Alert, the TPMS sensors on the new Sentra can send a signal through the TPMS that flashes the hazard indicators and sounds the horn when you're filling the tires and the pressure reaches the recommended level. If the tire is over-inflated by more than 4 psi while you're filling the tires, the horn beeps and the hazard indicators flash three times. To correct the pressure, push the core of the valve stem on the tire briefly to release some air. When the pressure reaches the recommended cold tire pressure, the horn beeps once. This function operates only when the shift lever position is in Park (P) with the ignition ON.

Note: When beginning tire inflation, it takes a few seconds for the Easy-Fill tire alert to function. If there is no response for approximately 15 seconds or more, cancel the Easy-Fill Tire Alert function and move the vehicle approximately 1 meter (3.2 feet) backward or forward, and then try again.

To return the tire to the recommended COLD tire pressure, deflate the tire until the horn sounds once and the hazard warning lamps stop blinking.

Maintenance-Initializations

Extended Storage Switch and BCM Transit Mode

The 2013 Sentra is equipped with an extended storage switch, used for long term vehicle storage. When delivered to the dealer, it is pulled out, disabling several electrical functions that may create a drain on the 12 volt battery. When vehicles are delivered to the dealer the BCM is in "transit mode". With the BCM in transit mode and the ignition OFF, some functions may not work.

When the vehicle is delivered to the customer the ESS must pushed in to the "fuse engaged" position, and the BCM Transit Mode must be OFF (canceled).
